The Lexile Framework® for Reading: Matching Readers to Text
Lexile® measures take the guesswork out of matching students with books and other materials that are targeted to their individual reading abilities. When students read text within their Lexile range (about 50L above to 100L below their Lexile measure), they should comprehend enough of the text to make sense of it, while still being challenged enough to maintain interest and learning.
Using Lexiles at Home
Check out the Find a Book Web site!
- Find books and build reading lists that match your child’s Lexile level and favorite genres
- See if the books are available at your local library
- Purchase the books directly from major online bookstores
Using Lexiles in the Classroom
- Develop targeted reading lists tailored to each student’s ability.
- Enhance thematic teaching by building a bank of books at varying Lexile levels that support the theme and provide a way for all students to successfully participate in the theme.
- Use as an additional organizing tool to sequence reading materials. In addition to choosing a topic, Lexile measures can be used to pace the difficulty levels of materials throughout the year.
- Develop a reading folder for each student that includes a list of books with that student’s Lexile range, reports of recent assessment scores and a parent form to record at-home reading.
- Choose texts lower in a student’s Lexile range when factors make a reading situation more challenging, threatening, or unfamiliar.
- Select texts at or above the student’s Lexile range to stimulate growth when a topic is familiar or interesting to a student, or if the text is supported by background teaching or discussion.
- Use the free Lexile Book Database to search for titles among the more than 115,000.
- Use the free Lexile Analyzer to gauge expected text comprehension at various Lexile measures. First-time users must register.
